Self-Care in Sobriety: 10 Ways to Unwind Without a Drink

Meet Suzanne

Suzanne is the host of the popular sobriety podcast, The Sober Mom Life, and is also a sobriety and lifestyle influencer at My Kind of Sweet. Suzanne quit drinking more than 4 years ago and has found freedom from moderation, a message she proudly shares with the world. When she's not glamorizing sobriety, Suzanne enjoys spending her time with her 3 kids, her husband, and her dog, Georgia, all while reheating her coffee, until she eventually forgets it in the microwave.

Let’s be real, life can be a lot. Stress piles up, responsibilities never take a day off, and at the end of a long, exhausting day, the idea of “unwinding” with a drink is practically built into our culture. From happy hours to “rosé all day” slogans plastered on everything from throw pillows to baby onesies (seriously, why?), we’ve been conditioned to believe that alcohol is the ultimate way to relax. But here’s the truth: You don’t need a drink to take the edge off. In fact, the real magic happens when you learn to care for yourself without numbing out. Sobriety isn’t about deprivation, it’s about rediscovering what actually soothes your soul. So if you’re looking for ways to unwind that don’t involve a bottle opener, here are 10 ways to unwind without a drink.

10 Ways to Unwind Without a Drink

1. Romanticize Your Nighttime Routine

There’s something oddly satisfying about slipping into cozy pajamas, lighting a candle, and doing your skincare routine like you’re the main character in a feel-good movie. Trade in the nightcap for a luxe face mask, a fluffy robe, and maybe even a spritz of lavender pillow mist. Let this time be sacred, no rushing, no multitasking, just pure, indulgent self-care.

2. Get Outside and Move Your Body

A slow evening walk, a quick yoga flow, or even just sitting on your porch and breathing in fresh air can do wonders for stress. Bonus points if you watch the sunset or listen to an audiobook that makes you feel good. Movement shifts your energy, clears your mind, and reminds you that your body deserves to be nurtured, not numbed.

3. Make a Cup of Something Cozy

Tea, hot cocoa, or a fun mocktail, pick your poison (minus the poison). The act of making a soothing drink can be just as relaxing as drinking it, especially if you slow down and savor the moment. There’s something incredibly grounding about holding a warm mug in your hands, taking a deep breath, and letting yourself just be.

4. Take a Hot Bath (or the Best Shower of Your Life)

We’re talking spa mode, Epsom salts, essential oils, dim lighting, and no one barging in to ask where their other sock is. Let the warm water melt away the stress, and just be. If a bath isn’t your thing, turn your shower into a sanctuary, play soft music, use your favorite body wash, and imagine the water washing away all the tension of the day.

5. Create a Feel-Good Playlist

Music is medicine. Whether it’s chill indie vibes, nostalgic throwbacks, or a playlist titled “Songs That Make Me Feel Like a Badass,” put on something that shifts your mood in the best way possible. Let yourself dance, sing at the top of your lungs, or just close your eyes and let the music carry you to a better headspace.

6. Doodle, Journal, or Get Creative

You don’t have to be the next Picasso, just grab a journal, sketchbook, or even a coloring book and let your mind wander. No rules, no expectations, just creative freedom. Getting your thoughts out on paper (or a canvas) is like decluttering your brain, making room for more peace and clarity.

7. Watch Something That Actually Feels Good

Skip the true crime documentary that’ll have you double-checking your locks and go for a comfort show, a comedy special, or a movie that feels like a warm hug. The goal is to consume content that adds to your relaxation, not something that secretly spikes your anxiety while you convince yourself you’re “unwinding.”

8. Call or Text a Friend

Connection is one of the biggest secrets to a happy sober life. Whether it’s a deep conversation or sending unhinged voice notes about your day, reaching out to a friend can be the perfect way to unwind. Even a quick check-in with someone who gets you can shift your whole mood and remind you that you’re never alone in this journey.

9. Try Breathwork or Meditation

Okay, hear me out: A few minutes of deep breathing or a short guided meditation can work actual wonders. There’s a reason people swear by it, because it helps. You don’t have to be a Zen master; just a few intentional breaths can reset your nervous system and help you find the calm you’re looking for.

10. Do Absolutely Nothing

Yep, nothing. Lay down, close your eyes, and let yourself just exist for a moment. No productivity, no guilt, just rest. Giving yourself permission to pause is one of the most underrated forms of self-care, and trust me, you deserve it.

At the end of the day, unwinding isn’t about escaping, it’s about actually relaxing, refilling your cup, and showing yourself the care you truly deserve. And the best part? No hangover, no regrets, just pure, real peace. These 10 ways to unwind without a drink are simple, effective, and most importantly, actually nourishing.

  1. Jen says:

I heard this and think it is so true, if your self care isn’t dialed in, you leave yourself open to bad habits (drinking, eating, etc.) I am learning to take care of myself so that drinking isn’t the issue-listening to what I need in the moment, taking time out to keep balance is what I need to focus on. Such a positive approach rather than just willpower over drinking and shame on why I “need” the drink. Loved your list!
